The star rating system is gone, the comments for videos are all messed up and it's so much harder getting to my playlists (I liked it when you could jump to your playlists from the homepage)
And where's my random shuffle button for the playlist!!! Seriously this was an amazing feature why's it gone!

I think the new design is great, its simple, clean and does its job. Dare I say its very apple like. I especially like the recommended videos on the right. Nice job youtube!
put it back to the way it was it was simpler then not now i agree with whoever said "whoever thought of that idea should be fired" and they should the new design is not only more complicated but harder to use and pointless because everyone was fine with the old design no one asked for a new layout so why make a new one
I like the new simplified layout, however I disagree with the removal of the rating systems. Why take it out? If I neither hate nor love a video, what am I supposed to do, just not express any opinion at all?
Look, I can see that google is trying to become "web 2.0" with a new layout that has no lines anywhere and is fucking impossible to use.
Well cut it the fuck out. There are a couple features that are cool, particularly the ability to scroll through the uploaders entire video library without leaving the video, but my fuck the new layout is atrocious. It first of all looks like somebody is learning HTML and hasnt learned how to use colors yet. The awkward placement of everything makes navigation a pain. This "like or dislike" crap doesnt work, because there is no "pure good" or "pure bad" video. The 5 star system worked fine.
And this comment system is the worst part. Highest rated comments? REALLY google? You honestly think anybody will want to see who said the most witty thing?
At least give us the option to revert back to the old layout. My god google, what you had was golden. You're trying to fix something that isn't broke.
As a web designer and developer, it has some improvements but please please and please move the poster and video details back to its place on the right side bar. it SUCKS right now!

I *really* hope this is an April Fools joke, for the new layout is absolutely horrible on an eeePC901, you need to scroll up and down to see the video and then read its description. It'll also make a legion of video bloggers seem totally weird - like they say "just hit subscribe" and point to their left. :-)
On the other hand, the ASCII version ought to be the ultimate geek quality option. I thought the ASCII video was pretty cool. It's a shame &textp=fool won't work for other things. Oh well. :-)
[BTW, Blogger sucks! I had to fire up IE8 because after disabling all the script blocking and allowing all cookies, it *still* complained; hell, my BANK can work with my desire to filter what I let on my machine, why can't Blogger?]
Personally i think its terrible, bring it back to normal, its awkward to use, i loved the beta channels but seriously the way the partner banners are placed and the description just put it back to normal there has been a strong community response, the only thing i did like and found it quite amusing was the advertisements the way it splits up and i placed in another window
somehow, i don't think youtube will listen to any of this, but i'll try anyway. Youtube, this new layout is shit, just complete and utter rubbish, there is no organisation to it whatsoever, the old one was fine. everything is just all over the place, and i'm not saying this because i don't like change, i'm saying this because i just can't believe that a whole load of people at the offices of youtube, thought and agreed that this was the way to go. i admit that some features like the strip of users videos was cool, but the rest of the change arounds are not needed. couldn't you have accomplished a simplification without screwing the whole thing up? sort it out...
Overall I like it, but the disappearance of the "related" videos is annoying -- now all I see are more videos from the same person who posted the one I'm viewing.
What the hell is this?! I know in my mind this isn't an April Fools joke but I'm still desperately hoping it is. Yet again, Youtube have changed something that didn't need fixing. The BETA pages, I could handle but this is just disgraceful. Everything is cluttered up everywhere! I know the five star system didn't work but please don't just have thumbs up and thumbs down like I have to either LOVE or HATE every video, what about a sideways thumb if I just liked it?
There are no lines to this and everything is so cluttered up, I can't be bothered reading the comments on videos anymore, not only due to it looking atrocious but half of them are about hating the new youtube layout!

This new design is the worst thing I have ever seen. Seriously, it should be taken down as soon as possible, its bad even for Aprils fool day. I will honestly make a video site than use youtube if it stays like this.
This is a mess. You haven't made it easier to use - you've made it far more hassle. When I first logged on here this morning, I thought there was a technical problem and tried to refresh the page - I can't believe this layout was intentional. The text is too faded, the comments section is just a total mess, various options such as "History" appear to have gone, you've made it more hassle to get to playlists. If you paid people for 8 months to come up with this, then you've thrown good money down the tube - youtube!
This is the worst youtube layout that l have seen, the others werent great but you got used to them; but this one is apsolutely crap! Please change it back if you want to keep half the people on youtube!!!

this isnt an april fools joke, i had this new layout for a few weeks now and ever since it changed things started to break, i cant favourite anything anymore, i cant view all of my favourites on my channel the "like" and "dislike" functions arent working and i cant even comment on anything
Daiger, The ability to Favourite a video is included in the new layout. If you click on the 'Save To' tab, you will see a dropdown menu of options, the first of which is 'Favourites'. If you click on this, it will add the video you are watching to your Favourites list.
This layout is pretty bad. No doubt part of that impression is from the newness of it; but the apparent removal of the random play option from playlists is pointless and really, really annoying. Why has this been removed? Am I mistaken, and it's actually hidden away somewhere, winking at me? Jamie?
rec205, There is no winking. Of that I have been assured. However, you are right in noting that 'Random Play' has been removed -- that is a functionality in Playlists that is likely to return in the future (a few people have noted its absence).
Thanks for your reply Jamie. I'm sure the changes will seem more reasonable once the initial shock and outrage of distraught youtubers across the land has exhausted itself (and random play is returned!).
the new layout really is disgraceful. i know it sounds petty, but it takes twice as many clicks to do anything, you can't just favourite a video, or rate it without having to go through some sort of drop down box. the 5 star system was far more versatile too. the lack of clear page compartmentalization is also ugly. sorry
This is rubbish, apart from the logo, and to find youur channel, it's fine. All other stuff shit. You cant rate on videos, cant see related videos, and the comment thing is totally messed up. I rather comment like I always have done, then the hassle of the new way. Change it, or Im going to another site
The new layout is drab, dull and boring. 99.9% of the community hates it. The site is called YOUTube, right? I'm assuming "You" as in "Us", the users, not YOU, the ones behind the scenes.
Also, why can't I choose to play high quality videos automatically? I can only choose "Never play higher quality" or "Dynamic". I don't want either of them; I've always played videos in HQ. Is this another "improvement"?
Change it back, its horrible, I can't rate, I don't know how to see more videos from this user anymore and it feels like something some has knocked up themselves in HTML in a couple of seconds. This, coupled with the glitch that doesn't let me close the videos I want to see on my subscriptions page is driving me away from Youtube.
Jamie, please tell me this is an April Fools joke. I took the survey, so what I feel about the new layout is there for people to read, but this new system is a travesty. The old one worked, perfectly. I never, ever had any problems with it. At least give us the option to change back to the old layout, or I fear you'll be losing a lot of your advert revenue.
5 star Ratings back. Sometimes I like a video a bit not a lot.
When I click a video in my subscriptions could I have the option not to AutoPlay them all by default.
And to people hating it - this is just like new Facebook all over again - give it a month or two and everyone will get used to it, like it and have no problems with it.

Congratulations on your revamp! Very impressive. It would be even better if half the videos hadn't become inoperable. I try to find a video- even an old video, and I am faced with white space and an interminable wait while it tells me it's downloading data from s.ytimg.com. Where are the videos?
I've tried using IE and Chrome rather than Firefox, I've tried updating Flash, I've tried deleting all cookies and disabling NoScript. I don't care what the Youtube pages look like- I do care that I can't watch the Youtube videos I want, when I want. Fix that and you can have all the design tweaks you want.
Truth be told this new design is harder to follow than the previous one. Hopefully I'll get used to it in time, but I think instead of enforcing it onto all users you should ask us whether we want to have the new design or not.
I much preferred the older design, It was easier to navigate; And It was just far better. Quite a bit of a waste of time on the re-design because It wasn't needed.

The 5 star ratings, is what made Youtube popular, now you cant comment in the normal way, cant see how many ratings until you clicked liked. The only thing good, is where you name is, you clicked the arrow, but it's confusing in that you cant see your inbox well. All the rest is awful, and youtube YOU means us, not YOU AS IN GOOGLE :D
What the heck was wrong with the old design? Seriously?
Old layout: The star system was PERFECT. WHY in the name of GOD would you change it? Thumbs up or down? Well done for limiting our options. Im simply baffled at why you thought getting rid of it will "Improve" the whole thing.
The colour use of red and white combination made it A LOT cleaner. Now you've given us white and a crappy shade of white - it looks messy, the text on the page seems to be thrown EVERYWHERE.
Now, the new design:
The links at the top of the page (browse, TV shows and Upload) should be in button form, not text-clicking. Why arent most links done in button form instead of ensuring the mouse is exactly on the link I want to go to?
And now watching a video is simply ugly. Why? I've got "related videos" listed on the right hand side of the video. Whats wrong with the description being put there? It was nice to just glance over to the side and read about the video before it started, not have to look down the page to read the description then scroll up once it started. Infact, the whole description box is gone and replaced with and ugly interface - a block of TEXT, much like this paragraph. Its ugly isnt it? Imagine having this below a video that you're watching. How ugly and cramped is that? BOX IT OFF AT THE SIDE.
The comments layout is ugly, too. Why allow the text of the comment to go right underneath the username? Why is the thumbs up-sign not placed to the side and cramped up into the text, too?
In conclusion - this is the most disgusting layout yet. You;ve made some UNNECCESARY changes to a layout that was FINE in the first place.
Clearly the key word used for this design is the word "cramped".

This is horrible, I want the old layout back. It wasn't broken, there was no need to dick about with it. The comments on this new one all seem to merge together as there's no longer any seperators and the usernames aren't in bold, same with the related videos, and why on Earth did you decide to move the "more from..." from on the right to the top? I know it's April fools day, but this new layout is just shit.

I would happily pay a small monthly fee to use Youtube IF, and only if, the old functionality and access to videos were restored. However, this is a total mess. I cannot access videos unless they are stored in a Youtube cache. Is this a consequence of the redesign, or is this just an additional bug?
Instead of just saying "what the flying fuck are you doing youtube" or something to that effect, I'm going to offer constructive criticism.
First of all, I think the original goal of simplifying the video pages was a good idea, but you've gone the wrong way about doing it. The description was perfectly fine at the side, and you could still simplify it by having the description be part of the video flash object. Have a small button on the side saying "view description" - when clicked, the description flies out to the side. So as not to interfere with the related videos on the side, the related videos would be pushed down.
Onto the comments.
Having the "post comment" box above the rest of the comments is a good idea I think, but the "top rated comments" part is wholly unnecessary. This seems to severely detract from the original goal of simplicity - I really couldn't care less which comments have been deemed by the (mostly retarded) youtube community the best.
A better system of displaying the comments would be to increase the number of comments shown, but put them in a scrolling text box to save space. Now with very popular videos, this presents a problem because there will be literally thousands of comments. To prevent this, simply add a page system again, but only after 100 or so comments.
Anyway, that's all I can think of at the moment. Good luck with whatever the fuck you're doing youtube.
Also, the thumbs up/down ratings for videos I disagree with, but you could improve it by (I suppose) putting the percentages of like/dislike next to the videos on the related videos section, and also in search results. This will help to filter out the crap that I accidentally click on sometimes.

I feel the page looks hideous. It reminds me of a virus infested porno site. The comments are IMPOSSIBLE to understand; I have no clue what the hell is going on there and a lot of the time I can't reply. The removal of the rating system is also a load of tripe; it was something that was good for youtube rather than this facebook 'LIKE' rip-off. Seriously. I like some features, for example, looking through a users videos while still being able to watch your current video. However, if we lost this feature on returning the layout to how it was, I would be more than willing to say goodbye. :)
RIP YouTube we all loved... the comment section just looks a mess... the page may be simpler and easy to use but it just looks dull. the favourite button is gone... related videos have merged into a new bar on the side... i strongly dislike this new design, i really do hope the team at YouTube read all of these comments and do what the mass majority want... a return to the old layout. Nobody asked for a new layout, so why make one?
I agree with the above user on infested porno site. as much as porn is a good thing for society. this porn isn't. I hate to say it. but sometimes porn is bad. back to my topic of youtube, I dislike the new layout very much because it has this uncomfortable feel rather then the more "homey" feel that youtube once had. Without the rating system, i feel I cant rate a video, much less than just comment on it which who reads all comments anyways? I hope it goes back to the old way.
I'm all for change, change is good, but only when it improves whats been changed. And this new design really is pretty bad! Its ugly and bland and certainly not easier to use. Sure, we'll all get used to it but that goes for the old design too. Were there really people that found it confusing to use? Because if there were they're going to have an equally hard time with this new one. There wasn't that much wrong with the old design, certainly it didn't require a complete rethink. The comments are a nightmare to read now. And the description looks a mess. I uploaded my very first video earlier and the description was all over the place with the text split into loads of different paragraphs, sometimes mid-sentence.
Truly awful.
Please bring back the old layout, or at least let us have the option to customise it the way we want.

You "simplified" the channel button on top right leaving awful amount of free space - I´m asking, what for? I dont see any new messages& getting to my main page takes more time now.. not to mention the horrible video watching page. I dont get it why you must always change something.

Navigating around Youtube on the whole used to be a one click process, now alot of it take two... How is that simplifying things?
I didn't mind the previous changes,i embraced them and usually signed up for Beta, but this new one really is terrible both to look at and navigate. I garuntee you i will never get used to it like i did the previous changes.
Youtube's mistakes is someone else's gain though and their biggest mistake of all is that they don't listen to the people who make them who they are. . Im off to do some web dev.
I tried, I really did, but I fail to find any positive changes.
Wherever I place the cursor, something goes black or blue, large pops up to cover half the screen and then my browser just decides that it's game over and kills itself without error messages.
The video itself? Wait, there's a video on these pages? If you mean that black little box that barely shines past the related videos, oh, no wait, that's a pop up.
The comment system is absolutely horrible! How am I supposed to make any sense of which comment is who's, where it belongs and to which reply it was posted? Oh, the @xxx sign? Hm, doesn't seem like that comment made it on the front page, I'm really excited about manually clicking through 253 pages in the hope of finding it.
You've also turned every single feature that I wanted to have direct access to into a multi functional button which are coded so badly that I'm no longer able to use them.
Hey youtube, one question, you said you have been listening to feedback for a good while now and your taking all this on board but if you have for example 1000 people fo feedback and 97 didnt like the new layout, at what does it take for you to understand this is not a good idea and to either go back to the old layout or give users a choice to use the new or the old! if you are honest you will give us the figures as to how many like compared to not like at all the new design, but i know this wont happen as the only way youtube will stop this new layout is when the users (ie us the public) stop using it!!! I hope u do listen and prove nearly all of us wrong! thanx again...

I would be very happy if Amazon updated their page and made it more modern. I can understand the "can't see ratings until I rate" bit but there is really no reason to hate stuff that was created for you for FREE. Overall look and functionality - It's cleaner, simpler and easier to use.
It's simpler, as a result of this it looks like something decades old, before web design became good.
- Information about a video is now grouped together in one place and there's a consistent way to get more detail when you need it. This way, unless something's truly useful to you, it doesn't clutter up your page.
What on earth were you thinking? Why have you moved everything to inconvenient places? Why have you added stupid drop down menus where it isn't needed, and just decreases helpful navigability? It's a joke.
- We've cleaned up the actions bar; you'll see a streamlined presentation for sharing, flagging and embedding controls.
I hate it. I don't want to sit through hours of drop down menus to click something.
Discovery - The right-hand side of the page is devoted to the next video to watch. We're smarter about suggesting the next videos to watch based on how you found the video you're watching in the first place.
What do you mean 'the next video to watch'? That isn't how 98% of the population USE YouTube. We don't want to be told suggestions on what to watch; that's what Related Videos is for. Talking of Related Videos, where on earth have you put it? And where's the 'More from this uploader' box gone?
- The channel name and subscribe button are now both on top of the video. We found that you prefer having a quick peek at more videos uploaders have created before deciding whether to subscribe to their channels.
YES, AND WE DO THAT WITH THE 'MORE VIDEOS FROM THIS UPLOADER' BOX YOU REMOVED FOR NO REASON. PATHETIC. WE DON'T WANT TO LOOK ABOVE A VIDEO - IT LOOKS MESSY.
Playlists - There's a new playlist interface, with the next video in the list appearing consistently in the top right. You can easily expand that list or skip ahead using a new next button in the player controls.
And it's useless. I will never use it. I never have wanted to. I don't think anybody has.
- Saving to playlists is easier, and we've made Favourites the default option.
No, it's more tedious. Before i could very easy add videos to my playlist or to my favourites, and now I have to go through even more drop down menus just to do it.
Ratings - We've replaced the five-star ratings system with a simpler "likes / dislikes" model and introduced a new "Videos I Liked" list.
SIMPLER? No, it's just stupid, and this is what I hate the most. The five star rating system was far superior to this dumbed-down, idiots' version. I think it's complete rubbish.
Comments - Comments have a new highlights view which summarizes the best discussions and celebrates when creators communicate with their audiences.
The comments are probably ONE OF the worst things about this downgrade (all of it's terrible, but this by far is one of the most unappealing). Why the hell have you removed the separators and made it look like a mess? The paragraph blocks are thrown around everywhere, it's a complete mess and all of it looks like a dumbed down version so five year olds can easily navigate it. I know that is your age group, but this is complete trash and you should be serving people who evidently have higher IQs and intelligence than you.
Overall rating: 0/10 Total downgrade from a clean interface. Turned into a complete mess.
I have to say I'm unimpressed with the new layout. In particular with the rating system, details/info of video and saving to favourites.
I don't think there was ANYTHING wrong with the 5 star system other than maybe adding more stars however this is something I used to quickly gauge the quality of a video instead of having to endure 5 minutes of pain. This leads to spending the same amount of time on YT with less success in finding videos I really want to watch.
Where's the info? It's now spread out, changed position completely and been scattered over the whole page. This is not usability friendly IMO. There is information behind buttons, buttons and more buttons. Using buttons is a cheap, quick and nasty way of tidying the page up, especially with putting subscriptions well away from the rest of the videos similar to the active one. Why put them at the top? Noone ever looks between the YT logo and the video. Very poor usability.
Favourites - for a short while, I trawled through a few videos thinking that by hitting 'like' (a la StumbleUpon), I was saving them to my favourites. No sirreee I was contributing to a very vague rating system and have probably lost a few potential gems. Now I see 'favourites' are hidden behind another button.
There was literally nothing wrong with the layout before, give or take the odd tweak but I personally do not think there was a need for a revamp/regression. This appears to be an exercise in EGO! HEY GUYS LOOK HOW TIDY IT IS!
This is not tidy, this is like sweeping the muck under the carpet; sure you can see the floor but it's now harder to walk across through all the dirt and toys hidden underneath.
I certainly hope you can take some of our comments seriously as I think there has been a major change implemented without much broadcast of what exactly is happening.
Good god this is awful, if it's not broke don't fix it. At least give people the option to switch back to the old version even if it is with the silly thumbs things.
I have nothing against uogrades. But, surely their purpose is to improve? This "upgrade" just doesn't do that. It's that bad. many people in this comment thread thought it was an April Fool. That speaks volumes. I can put up with most of the changes. But, the comment system is now very hard to use & understand. There seems to be no logical order to the comments. Therefore, it's hard to reply to a comment, or to find it. Please put the comment system back to how it was. Why move video responses? There was absolutely no reason to move them. Once again, they are now harder to find. I thought was all supposed to make everything easier? I honestly think you are going to turn people away with this revamp & that's a great pity.

I love looking through my favourites with friends showing funny videos i watched or songs i listened to. This makes it go way better!
also, thanks for the new search with the video playing, at first i was like WTF but now you can keep a song playing while searching for the next, i used to open a new tab to search and let a video play...
the tab open close thing is cool too, just view videos by a person by clicking at top etc, and if you search, and it makes the video smaller just close the search tab to get it back.

ok i like the fact that the focus is back onto the video but my main issue with the new layout is the loss of the five star rating system i feel it gave a much truer score to what your watching and made it easier to pick out what you actually wanted to watch change is good when your moving forward but moving forward doesnt mean forgetting to look back at the things that helped youtube become so successful thinking about it i also miss the channel bar on the right it gave the video you were watching a bit more personality but my main issue is definitely with the rating system

The thing is guys, youtue saves bandwisth and money because of the new layout, its "cleaner" means it just has less to load for them, this is all to save money, they don't care what we think....I think I'm gna miss star ratings most of all.....With the star rating system I could see if a video was bullshit before watching it, if it was 1 star I would know that its a fake....but now....
Oh forget it, You google people arent going to listen....I'm going to a new search engine and another video site....Good luck with the next "improvement"...
This really isn't good, it looks cheap and minimalistic. The old design was way better. It may have less for them to load but videos seem reluctant to buffer unless I hit refresh. I now get error messages when I try to upload a vids as well! Sort it out!
This is a terrible change. There's no lines dividing up the different parts of the screen so it all just looks jumbled up. How could anyone think getting rid of the 5-star rating system and replacing it with thumbs up/thumbs down was a GOOD idea? Where is my history? How do I delete videos from my quicklist after I've watched them now? Also, I would like the video discription back in the sidebar, thank you very much. The only good part of this change is being able to scroll through all of the user's other videos. Other than that, this redesign is crap.
I don't like the fact the home page was removed - it was the main way I browsed videos. It showed me subscribers, related videos and what everyone else was watching on one handy page.
I never use the "pure" subscribers list and now the number of videos I view is drastically cut as I'm missing out on those that I would have normally watched as they are lost in the crowd of subscribers.
I like the idea of a simplified vote - but you probably need a neutral response in there - not every thing is black and white.
I really don't like the removal of the mail icon at the top that showed how many comments etc you had waiting. Not only do you have to click to see it, but it doesn't work for me e.g. it says one, but when I click I actually have three.
I also preferred the way you could click on your user name top right to be automatically taken to your channel instead of the drop down menu thing.
The biggest problem is they way the comments are displayed. Though this isn't a new issue as a LOT of people I know have always disliked the way they are displayed.
The "Uploader Comments" seems pointless and to my mind the comments should simply be displayed in chronological order, starting with the most recent, with all "replies" locked to their original comment.
Does YT realize that if you set your videos to approve comments, the commenter gets an error message rather than the old "awaiting approval" message. I just sent some poor sod 6 repeat messages not realizing they had all gone through. That's progress for you!

Why is it, when I search for something, like another band, it goes back to the artist I just searched for. Also when I click show by upload date, it reverts back to relevance?

There are a couple features that are cool, particularly the ability to scroll through the uploaders entire video library without leaving the video, but my fuck the new layout is atrocious. It first of all looks like somebody is learning HTML and hasnt learned how to use colors yet. The awkward placement of everything makes navigation a pain. This "like or dislike" crap doesnt work, because there is no "pure good" or "pure bad" video. The 5 star system worked fine.
And this comment system is the worst part. Highest rated comments? REALLY google? You honestly think anybody will want to see who said the most witty thing?
At least give us the option to revert back to the old layout. My god google, what you had was golden. You're trying to fix something that isn't broke.

When I first logged on here this morning, I thought there was a technical problem and tried to refresh the page - I can't believe this layout was intentional. The text is too faded, the comments section is just a total mess, various options such as "History" appear to have gone, you've made it more hassle to get to playlists. If you paid people for 8 months to come up with this, then you've thrown good money down the tube - youtube!

ReplyDeleteThe ability to Favourite a video is included in the new layout. If you click on the 'Save To' tab, you will see a dropdown menu of options, the first of which is 'Favourites'. If you click on this, it will add the video you are watching to your Favourites list.
This layout is pretty bad. No doubt part of that impression is from the newness of it; but the apparent removal of the random play option from playlists is pointless and really, really annoying. Why has this been removed? Am I mistaken, and it's actually hidden away somewhere, winking at me? Jamie?

ReplyDeleteThere is no winking. Of that I have been assured. However, you are right in noting that 'Random Play' has been removed -- that is a functionality in Playlists that is likely to return in the future (a few people have noted its absence).

Change it back, its horrible, I can't rate, I don't know how to see more videos from this user anymore and it feels like something some has knocked up themselves in HTML in a couple of seconds. This, coupled with the glitch that doesn't let me close the videos I want to see on my subscriptions page is driving me away from Youtube.

The old one worked, perfectly. I never, ever had any problems with it. At least give us the option to change back to the old layout, or I fear you'll be losing a lot of your advert revenue.

When I click a video in my subscriptions could I have the option not to AutoPlay them all by default.

ReplyDeleteIt would be even better if half the videos hadn't become inoperable. I try to find a video- even an old video, and I am faced with white space and an interminable wait while it tells me it's downloading data from s.ytimg.com.
Where are the videos?
I've tried using IE and Chrome rather than Firefox, I've tried updating Flash, I've tried deleting all cookies and disabling NoScript.
I don't care what the Youtube pages look like- I do care that I can't watch the Youtube videos I want, when I want. Fix that and you can have all the design tweaks you want.
Streamlined design? It's certainly uncontaminated by videos!

The 5 star ratings, is what made Youtube popular, now you cant comment in the normal way, cant see how many ratings until you clicked liked. The only thing good, is where you name is, you clicked the arrow, but it's confusing in that you cant see your inbox well. All the rest is awful, and youtube YOU means us, not YOU AS IN GOOGLE :D

Old layout:
The star system was PERFECT. WHY in the name of GOD would you change it? Thumbs up or down? Well done for limiting our options. Im simply baffled at why you thought getting rid of it will "Improve" the whole thing.
The colour use of red and white combination made it A LOT cleaner. Now you've given us white and a crappy shade of white - it looks messy, the text on the page seems to be thrown EVERYWHERE.
Now, the new design:
The links at the top of the page (browse, TV shows and Upload) should be in button form, not text-clicking. Why arent most links done in button form instead of ensuring the mouse is exactly on the link I want to go to?
And now watching a video is simply ugly. Why? I've got "related videos" listed on the right hand side of the video. Whats wrong with the description being put there? It was nice to just glance over to the side and read about the video before it started, not have to look down the page to read the description then scroll up once it started. Infact, the whole description box is gone and replaced with and ugly interface - a block of TEXT, much like this paragraph. Its ugly isnt it? Imagine having this below a video that you're watching. How ugly and cramped is that? BOX IT OFF AT THE SIDE.
The comments layout is ugly, too. Why allow the text of the comment to go right underneath the username? Why is the thumbs up-sign not placed to the side and cramped up into the text, too?
In conclusion - this is the most disgusting layout yet. You;ve made some UNNECCESARY changes to a layout that was FINE in the first place.
Clearly the key word used for this design is the word "cramped".
PLEASE change it back.

I cannot access videos unless they are stored in a Youtube cache. Is this a consequence of the redesign, or is this just an additional bug?

ReplyDeleteInstead of just saying "what the flying fuck are you doing youtube" or something to that effect, I'm going to offer constructive criticism.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I think the original goal of simplifying the video pages was a good idea, but you've gone the wrong way about doing it. The description was perfectly fine at the side, and you could still simplify it by having the description be part of the video flash object. Have a small button on the side saying "view description" - when clicked, the description flies out to the side. So as not to interfere with the related videos on the side, the related videos would be pushed down.
Onto the comments.
Having the "post comment" box above the rest of the comments is a good idea I think, but the "top rated comments" part is wholly unnecessary. This seems to severely detract from the original goal of simplicity - I really couldn't care less which comments have been deemed by the (mostly retarded) youtube community the best.
A better system of displaying the comments would be to increase the number of comments shown, but put them in a scrolling text box to save space. Now with very popular videos, this presents a problem because there will be literally thousands of comments. To prevent this, simply add a page system again, but only after 100 or so comments.
Anyway, that's all I can think of at the moment. Good luck with whatever the fuck you're doing youtube.
Also, the thumbs up/down ratings for videos I disagree with, but you could improve it by (I suppose) putting the percentages of like/dislike next to the videos on the related videos section, and also in search results. This will help to filter out the crap that I accidentally click on sometimes.

ReplyDeleteI feel the page looks hideous. It reminds me of a virus infested porno site. The comments are IMPOSSIBLE to understand; I have no clue what the hell is going on there and a lot of the time I can't reply.
The removal of the rating system is also a load of tripe; it was something that was good for youtube rather than this facebook 'LIKE' rip-off. Seriously.
I like some features, for example, looking through a users videos while still being able to watch your current video. However, if we lost this feature on returning the layout to how it was, I would be more than willing to say goodbye. :)

I agree with the above user on infested porno site. as much as porn is a good thing for society. this porn isn't. I hate to say it. but sometimes porn is bad. back to my topic of youtube, I dislike the new layout very much because it has this uncomfortable feel rather then the more "homey" feel that youtube once had. Without the rating system, i feel I cant rate a video, much less than just comment on it which who reads all comments anyways? I hope it goes back to the old way.

I'm all for change, change is good, but only when it improves whats been changed. And this new design really is pretty bad! Its ugly and bland and certainly not easier to use. Sure, we'll all get used to it but that goes for the old design too. Were there really people that found it confusing to use? Because if there were they're going to have an equally hard time with this new one. There wasn't that much wrong with the old design, certainly it didn't require a complete rethink. The comments are a nightmare to read now. And the description looks a mess. I uploaded my very first video earlier and the description was all over the place with the text split into loads of different paragraphs, sometimes mid-sentence.

Navigating around Youtube on the whole used to be a one click process, now alot of it take two... How is that simplifying things?
ReplyDeleteI didn't mind the previous changes,i embraced them and usually signed up for Beta, but this new one really is terrible both to look at and navigate. I garuntee you i will never get used to it like i did the previous changes.
Youtube's mistakes is someone else's gain though and their biggest mistake of all is that they don't listen to the people who make them who they are. . Im off to do some web dev.

Wherever I place the cursor, something goes black or blue, large pops up to cover half the screen and then my browser just decides that it's game over and kills itself without error messages.
The video itself? Wait, there's a video on these pages? If you mean that black little box that barely shines past the related videos, oh, no wait, that's a pop up.
The comment system is absolutely horrible! How am I supposed to make any sense of which comment is who's, where it belongs and to which reply it was posted? Oh, the @xxx sign? Hm, doesn't seem like that comment made it on the front page, I'm really excited about manually clicking through 253 pages in the hope of finding it.
You've also turned every single feature that I wanted to have direct access to into a multi functional button which are coded so badly that I'm no longer able to use them.

Hey youtube, one question, you said you have been listening to feedback for a good while now and your taking all this on board but if you have for example 1000 people fo feedback and 97 didnt like the new layout, at what does it take for you to understand this is not a good idea and to either go back to the old layout or give users a choice to use the new or the old! if you are honest you will give us the figures as to how many like compared to not like at all the new design, but i know this wont happen as the only way youtube will stop this new layout is when the users (ie us the public) stop using it!!! It's simpler, as a result of this it looks like something decades old, before web design became good.
- Information about a video is now grouped together in one place and there's a consistent way to get more detail when you need it. This way, unless something's truly useful to you, it doesn't clutter up your page.
What on earth were you thinking? Why have you moved everything to inconvenient places? Why have you added stupid drop down menus where it isn't needed, and just decreases helpful navigability? It's a joke.
- We've cleaned up the actions bar; you'll see a streamlined presentation for sharing, flagging and embedding controls.
I hate it. I don't want to sit through hours of drop down menus to click something.
Discovery
- The right-hand side of the page is devoted to the next video to watch. We're smarter about suggesting the next videos to watch based on how you found the video you're watching in the first place.
What do you mean 'the next video to watch'? That isn't how 98% of the population USE YouTube. We don't want to be told suggestions on what to watch; that's what Related Videos is for. Talking of Related Videos, where on earth have you put it? And where's the 'More from this uploader' box gone?
- The channel name and subscribe button are now both on top of the video. We found that you prefer having a quick peek at more videos uploaders have created before deciding whether to subscribe to their channels.
YES, AND WE DO THAT WITH THE 'MORE VIDEOS FROM THIS UPLOADER' BOX YOU REMOVED FOR NO REASON. PATHETIC. WE DON'T WANT TO LOOK ABOVE A VIDEO - IT LOOKS MESSY.
Playlists
- There's a new playlist interface, with the next video in the list appearing consistently in the top right. You can easily expand that list or skip ahead using a new next button in the player controls.
And it's useless. I will never use it. I never have wanted to. I don't think anybody has.
- Saving to playlists is easier, and we've made Favourites the default option.
No, it's more tedious. Before i could very easy add videos to my playlist or to my favourites, and now I have to go through even more drop down menus just to do it.
Ratings
- We've replaced the five-star ratings system with a simpler "likes / dislikes" model and introduced a new "Videos I Liked" list.
SIMPLER? No, it's just stupid, and this is what I hate the most. The five star rating system was far superior to this dumbed-down, idiots' version. I think it's complete rubbish.
Comments
- Comments have a new highlights view which summarizes the best discussions and celebrates when creators communicate with their audiences.
The comments are probably ONE OF the worst things about this downgrade (all of it's terrible, but this by far is one of the most unappealing). Why the hell have you removed the separators and made it look like a mess? The paragraph blocks are thrown around everywhere, it's a complete mess and all of it looks like a dumbed down version so five year olds can easily navigate it. I know that is your age group, but this is complete trash and you should be serving people who evidently have higher IQs and intelligence than you.

ReplyDeleteI don't think there was ANYTHING wrong with the 5 star system other than maybe adding more stars however this is something I used to quickly gauge the quality of a video instead of having to endure 5 minutes of pain. This leads to spending the same amount of time on YT with less success in finding videos I really want to watch.
Where's the info? It's now spread out, changed position completely and been scattered over the whole page. This is not usability friendly IMO. There is information behind buttons, buttons and more buttons. Using buttons is a cheap, quick and nasty way of tidying the page up, especially with putting subscriptions well away from the rest of the videos similar to the active one. Why put them at the top? Noone ever looks between the YT logo and the video. Very poor usability.
Favourites - for a short while, I trawled through a few videos thinking that by hitting 'like' (a la StumbleUpon), I was saving them to my favourites. No sirreee I was contributing to a very vague rating system and have probably lost a few potential gems. Now I see 'favourites' are hidden behind another button.
There was literally nothing wrong with the layout before, give or take the odd tweak but I personally do not think there was a need for a revamp/regression. This appears to be an exercise in EGO! HEY GUYS LOOK HOW TIDY IT IS!
This is not tidy, this is like sweeping the muck under the carpet; sure you can see the floor but it's now harder to walk across through all the dirt and toys hidden underneath.
I certainly hope you can take some of our comments seriously as I think there has been a major change implemented without much broadcast of what exactly is happening.
Good god this is awful, if it's not broke don't fix it. At least give people the option to switch back to the old version even if it is with the silly thumbs things.

I love looking through my favourites with friends showing funny videos i watched or songs i listened to. This makes it go way better!
also, thanks for the new search with the video playing, at first i was like WTF but now you can keep a song playing while searching for the next, i used to open a new tab to search and let a video play...
the tab open close thing is cool too, just view videos by a person by clicking at top etc, and if you search, and it makes the video smaller just close the search tab to get it back.

ok i like the fact that the focus is back onto the video but my main issue with the new layout is the loss of the five star rating system i feel it gave a much truer score to what your watching and made it easier to pick out what you actually wanted to watch change is good when your moving forward but moving forward doesnt mean forgetting to look back at the things that helped youtube become so successful thinking about it i also miss the channel bar on the right it gave the video you were watching a bit more personality but my main issue is definitely with the rating system

The thing is guys, youtue saves bandwisth and money because of the new layout, its "cleaner" means it just has less to load for them, this is all to save money, they don't care what we think....I think I'm gna miss star ratings most of all.....With the star rating system I could see if a video was bullshit before watching it, if it was 1 star I would know that its a fake....but now....

ReplyDeleteThis really isn't good, it looks cheap and minimalistic. The old design was way better. It may have less for them to load but videos seem reluctant to buffer unless I hit refresh. I now get error messages when I try to upload a vids as well! Sort it out!

ReplyDeleteI really like the channel the way it is.
I don't like the fact the home page was removed - it was the main way I browsed videos. It showed me subscribers, related videos and what everyone else was watching on one handy page.
I never use the "pure" subscribers list and now the number of videos I view is drastically cut as I'm missing out on those that I would have normally watched as they are lost in the crowd of subscribers.
I like the idea of a simplified vote - but you probably need a neutral response in there - not every thing is black and white.
I really don't like the removal of the mail icon at the top that showed how many comments etc you had waiting. Not only do you have to click to see it, but it doesn't work for me e.g. it says one, but when I click I actually have three.
I also preferred the way you could click on your user name top right to be automatically taken to your channel instead of the drop down menu thing.
The biggest problem is they way the comments are displayed. Though this isn't a new issue as a LOT of people I know have always disliked the way they are displayed.
The "Uploader Comments" seems pointless and to my mind the comments should simply be displayed in chronological order, starting with the most recent, with all "replies" locked to their original comment.
