YouTube Supports Anti-Bullying Week 2009

In support of the UK's Anti-Bullying Week, YouTube has signed up to become an official training partner for leading children’s charity Beatbullying on its peer mentoring site CyberMentors.org.uk. So as well as featuring videos today on our homepage that give advice on dealing with cyberbullying and staying safe on YouTube, we're also hosting a special CyberMentors training session for the YouTube UK community at Google London this Saturday. Here is a video showing what happened last year:
CyberMentors are young people who have been trained to become online peer mentors, providing advice and support to other young people who are being bullied both off and online. If you want to get involved, and are aged between 13 and 25, take a look at this video to find out more, and email admin@beatbullying.org to sign up for a place.
And don't forget - if you encounter bullying on YouTube, or know someone who has, go straight to our Help and Safety Tool to take action.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but this is a sad excuse for doing nothing, YouTube. I get messages again and again, from people who got harassed on YouTube and receive no sipport or help at all from YouTube, because sadly, YouTube's "take action" does not go beyond the advice to block a bully, which is their top tip. The low-cal cariation od a help offering is to "report being bullied to a trusted adult". And what is this adult to do then? Contact YouTube for help? By going to the Safety Center, and join the circle ride to nowhere?
You as the abused person are cirrently still being left alone by the operator of the Social Networking Site, and you end up in lofty lists of useless tips top PREVENT something that, for you, has long since HAPPENED already, when you as the victim come to the Safety Center for help!
Bullies abuse and terrorize people, make them victims, and hurt them. Those victims need active support and protection; they need to see that YouTube takes action against bullies who disrespect the rules and regulations - but those victims do NOT need endless reading lists of "how to prevent", that lead them nowhere!

Thanks for posting Jamie, it is defenently something that needs to be addressed on YouTube and I am glad that you guys are taking a stance. Cyberbullying is not just confined to young people though!

Hope you guys aren't succumbing to corporate bullying - have noticed a few MW2 hacking videos that have been removed from the site for what i can see is NO good reason. I know Infinity Ward used youtube to release a number of high profile promo videos and other information on their MW2 youtube page, that does not give them the right to dictate that other information is put out in public domain regarding this game
ReplyDelete"This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions", please I would greatly appreciate it if youtube did something to stop the video thumbnails showing up on my pages before I actually click on them instead of telling me it's restricted after I click to see them. ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see YouTube do something, but at the end of the day they won't lift a finger to stop bullies here on YouTube. I've had people steal my videos in order to upset me and they keep posting nasty comments. I report them, what happens they get a slap on the wirst and send them on thier way. YouTube I am disapointed.
